How to build a hedgehog highway

Hedgehogs roam up to two kilometres a night, and a solid fence is a wall to them. Cutting a gap is the cheapest conservation job you can do.

What you need

  1. Talk to your neighbours. One hole is not a highway.
  2. Cut a 13cm square gap at the base of the fence or dig a shallow channel under the gate.
  3. Keep the way clear. Trim back grass and leave a log pile nearby for shelter.

Our Hedgehog Highway Kit has gap signs for your neighbours and a log-pile starter. Every kit sold funds our care.
